6 Tips for Transitioning Your Home From Winter to Spring

These home maintenance tips are the perfect way to welcome the new season.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived—springtime. When the breezes get warmer, the sun shines brighter, and the flower blossoms begin to bloom, the first official signs of the season are upon us.

Usher in this spring by making sure your house is ready for the transition. This seasonal shift requires homeowners to give their properties some much needed TLC in preparation for the rising temperatures to come.

These six maintenance reminders will ensure your home is at its best so you can enjoy all the beauty and fun spring has to offer.

Secure the Wood Trim

The exposed wood areas around window panes and door frames are susceptible to a vast array of wear and tear caused by exposure to the elements. Walk around your home and make sure the wooden panels are secure--jiggly or loose areas should be fixed.

If you find a weak spot, use an electric screwdriver to make a quick repair. This will save you lots of trouble later down the line.

Clean Out the Gutters

You know the old saying: April showers bring May flowers. As we’re waiting for the flowers to bloom, make sure your home is prepared to handle spring’s frequent rainfall. Gutters play the vital role of protecting the home and roof by keeping rain away.

Damaged or clogged gutters can’t perform this job properly, which can lead to water damage. Remove the built-up leaves and debris and get your gutters clean and clear.

Fix Cracked Concrete

Even the slightest crack in your driveway can turn into a big issue. Examine the driveway and sidewalks surrounding your home, and make the repairs wherever necessary. When you catch the problem early, fixing it is simple and inexpensive.

Clean the Refrigerator Coils

Coils remove hot air from the fridge, but when they’re dusty, it makes it harder to conduct the heat. When this happens, you’re left with a fridge that’s less efficient. Avoid a high energy bill by using a gentle brush or vacuum attachment to clean the coils.

Check on the Chimney

Catching issues ahead of time is the key to keeping costs low and avoiding potential disasters. It’s a smart idea to inspect your chimney and assess any damages. Clean out the flue and contact a certified local chimney sweep to come in for an inspection.

Refill the Water Heater Tank

Water heaters need to be drained and refilled in order to remove built-up sediments that reduce efficiency and cause higher electric bills. Drain old water through the spigot on the bottom of the tank, and refill it with fresh clean water.
